A retired Senior Nigerian Air Force Officer/Chief Flight Surgeon, Chief Aerospace Medical Consultant, Chief Medical Director, Postgraduate Clinical Tutor, Aviator, Author, Philanthropist, Political Party Leader, Community Leader, Christian Minister and Leadership Mentor, Dr Makanjuola Akindele Owolabi is Nigeria's and, indeed, West Africa's first Specialist Fellow in Aerospace Medicine/Aviation Medicine & Human Factors of West African College of Physicians and the USA – based global Aerospace Medical Association.

To mark 60 years of university education in Nigeria on 6th June 2008, Dr Owolabi was one of only two Nigerians honoured with Distinguished Alumnus Award of Nigeria's premiere university (University of Ibadan) for his pioneering work in the field of Aviation Medicine in Nigeria. Born on 8th August 1953 at Ile – Ife as the first child of the family of late Pa Clement Ebun Owolabi of Aisegba Ekiti and late Mrs Elizabeth Folake Owolabi of Agbado Ekiti, later in 1964, Mr Akindele Owolabi was the School Prefect at L.A. Primary School in Ode Ekiti (old Ondo State). In 1969, Mr Owolabi (as School Pianist, Treasurer for the Boys' Scout, Leader of the Junior Scripture Union Society and School Librarian) obtained Class 0f 1969 Best West African School Certificate Examination Result – Grade 1 with Distinctions at Oyemekun Grammar School, Akure, Ondo State. Proceeding to the University of Ibadan Premedical School in 1970, Mr Owolabi was later elected President of University of Ibadan Medical Students Association in the 1974/75 academic session at College of Medicine (previously Medical School), University College Hospital, Ibadan.

In October 1980, Dr Makanjuola Akindele Owolabi obtained Nigeria's first postgraduate Diploma in Aviation Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 1981, he set up (mostly with his personal equipment
from the United Kingdom) Nigeria's first Aviation Medicine Department at Nigerian Air Force Base Kaduna. Later, in a rare feat of honour militarily world–wide, he was commissioned into Nigerian Air Force Service (NAF/1816) with an Initial Rank of Squadron Leader in December 1985. He, however, retired voluntarily from active service in January 1993 to set up Nigeria's first private Aviation Medical Centre at Kaduna for the pioneering work in his chosen field of Aviation Medicine. His numerous academic laurels include MBBS (Ibadan); Diploma in Aviation Medicine (UK); Fellow of West African College of Physicians; Fellow of Aerospace Medical Association (USA); Honorary Fellow of Institute of Administrative Management of Nigeria (1992); Member of American College of Occupational & Environmental Medicine; Member of Royal Aeronautical Society of London; Fellow of Royal Society of Medicine of London; Member of Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (USA); Member of Aerospace Human Factors Association (USA); Member of Association of Aviation Medical Examiners (UK); and Designated Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for USA, Canada, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and several European countries.


On secondment while on active service with Nigerian Air Force by the nation at the creation of Nigeria’s Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA), Dr Owolabi was pioneer Consultant & International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Authorized Medical Assessor for the Authority in Lagos while working concurrently at Nigerian Air Force Base Kaduna and FCAA Headquarters, Ikeja – Lagos from January 1990 t0 December 2000. Dr Owolabi, who has practised Medicine for 40 years, has been married for 38 years to sweetheart Mrs Edna Aina Owolabi, his partner in life, ministry work, business and politics. They are blessed with four great children each with excellent educational and professional achievements in Emergency Medicine; Architecture & IT Business; Master in International Business / Global Banking & Finance / Film Production; and Law with Master in Marketing aspects; respectively.
